Flores y Fuego is a hardcore punk band from Guadalajara. Rafael and Eduardo, formerly of the band Cuchillo, started writing songs together at the end of 2019. By May 2020, frontwoman Melisa had added lyrics and soul to those instrumentals, and the demos and sessions they recorded while the world was on pause became their debut record, Altar.
Pirates Press Records found them through a 15-second clip of Melisa’s furious scream that made them stop scrolling, watch it again and go looking for more. They put out Altar as an eight-song 12-inch.
Singing in Spanish, Flores y Fuego feed on the anger and frustration of modern life, questioning their place in the world and giving a voice to people who don’t have one, through Melisa’s sharp perspective as a woman. "¡Soy tu voz!" she screams at the end of their first song. It’s a fair warning.
